This year will mark the Ruby Jubilee (40 years) for Wagga Horse Trials. Beginning in 1975, the first event was organised by a committee drawn from the two pony clubs then existing in Wagga. Since then competition has occurred at least once yearly (apart from the occasional wash out) and has attracted entries from local, state, national and international competitors.
The original course was designed and built on Pomingalarna Common where events were held for 16 years with May 1991 being the last. In 1993 things became restless and a new location was sought on the site of the old Wagga Wagga Agricultural College and Captain Mark Phillips was invited to design the course.
The beautiful, professionally-built cross country course flows through open paddocks and lightly wooded parts with good vantage points for spectators. Course designers since Mark Phillips have been Hunter Doughty and Henry Hicks with new fences – some fixed and many portable – constantly being added and adjusted.
With the opening of the new state of the art facilities at the Riverina Equine Centre in 2014, we now hold the dressage phase and some showjumping on the wonderful all weather sand arenas.
The event will be held on May 9-10 2015 with the dressage on Saturday at the Equine Centre and all jumping at the cross country course on Sunday.
